Can I pay for my children's orthodontic treatment in instalments?

Do teeth with braces need special care 

Yes. Patients with braces must be careful to avoid hard, sticky, chewy and crunchy foods, or hard objects, such as pens, pencils or fingernails. Keeping the teeth and braces clean requires more precision and time, and must be done every day if the teeth and gums are to be healthy during and after orthodontic treatment. Clean, healthy teeth also move more quickly.

Can you be too old for braces? 

No. If the bone and gum tissue around the teeth are healthy, age is not a factor. About 20% of orthodontic patients are adults.

Are there food restriction while I have braces?  

Avoid eating

• Hard food  – they may damage braces by bending wires, loosening cement under the bands or breaking the little brackets and tubes attached to the teeth.
• ○
  Sticky food –  they may damage braces by bending wires and pulling bands loose.
• ○
  Foods high in sugar –  gives you tooth decay. If you eat any of them, brush your teeth immediately, or rinse your mouth with water. NB patients should rinse immediately after and then brush their teeth.

Apples, carrots and biltong etc. should be sliced and eaten very carefully. The crust of the toast should be avoided and rusks should be dipped in coffee or tea. Popcorn, lollipops, peanuts, toffees, ice and chewing gum should not be eaten.

Expectations while wearing braces

• Your teeth will be sore 
• A little difficulty in eating
• Need extra time to clean your teeth
• Occasional ulcers
